How To Relieve Health Related Issues From Work Related Stress

Posted by stressjudo on September 5, 2009

Let’s face it. No one wants to be around someone who is always complaining. Or always distracted. Or who is unreliable. But isn’t that pretty much how you get around your family and friends when you suffer from health related issues from work related stress? It’s painful, not having your friends around when you need them most.
But if you are driving them away, then you need to handle your stress better. Focusing on the effects of stress on the relationships in your life may be just as important as focusing on the effects of stress on the body.
Time management is a key component – but not the only one – of handling stress. Many people think time management is only for the workplace. But using time management, along with creative problem solving, meditation techniques, and other elements of a complete stress management system, can save your relationships also.
Here are some ways to use time management to handle stress. This will eliminate most of the problems above, so your friends can enjoy being around you again.
1. You can schedule time with your family and friends. Too often, time with your family and friends is scheduled around work, activities, or other distractions. By scheduling this time, you can focus on your friends, without the anxiety attack that you are taking time from work.
2. You can set priorities. Your time management system can remove the stress of “I should be doing a dozen other things” by properly prioritizing your work. When you know some things are not priorities, you don’t feel stress by not working on these things.
3. You can focus on work or your friends. Nothing is more annoying than realizing that the person you are talking with is mentally 1000 miles away. A quality time management system will virtually force you to focus on work during work periods, and friends during friend periods.
4. You aren’t depressed and bringing your friends down. Long term stress leads to depression. Short term stress can make you depressed, just from fighting it. So how many times have you killed your friends’ buzz just because you are too depressed and too stressed to have a good time? Managing your time to allow for focused attention to the stress, with periods of rejuvenation mixed in, should lift the depression.
5. You can attract new friends. When you are not stressed – when you have a positive attitude – when you have a reputation as a “go to” person – you will have people asking to be your friend. Setting goals and hitting goals will make you very positive and very attractive.
Handling how stress affects your health is one thing. Handling how stress affects your emotions and attitude is another. By using time management and 11 other components of a comprehensive stress management system, you can get rid of your “bad attitude” and enjoy your friends again. You can replace the definition of stress in your life with the definition of happiness.

4 Steps To Get Rid of Procrastination, Now!

Posted by stressjudo on June 8, 2009

Do you put off your work for later, only to find your deadlines steadily creeping in? Then you, my friend, are one of the millions of people afflicted by the procrastination virus. Procrastination is the biggest reason for loss of productivity and late output. Though many would not admit it, they would benefit greatly if they start their work on time.

For many people, putting off their work for later is more habit than desire. It can be so hard to get into a groove where starting your tasks in a timely fashion is a priority, especially if the consequences for being late are things that one can probably bear.

If you are one of these people, yet you desire to shake off your propensity for procrastination, then you have come to the right place. Here are a few tips to help you overcome this dilemma and become a more productive and reliable person.

1. Set schedules – It is very important that you have a list of activities to accomplish per day. This will help you realistically budget your time and resources. One of the cardinal sins people commit in regards to performing their tasks is to put off their work because they feel like there is so much time left. A journal, organizer, or calendar of events will help you plan and schedule your task so that you can start them promptly and finish them on time.

2. Save the Vacation for Later – Many people put their work off for later saying, “I’ll just have a little fun then buckle down to work later.” While it may be true that they may have more than enough time to accomplish their tasks, it would be better if they finished their work first and relax afterwards.

Wouldn’t relaxation be sweeter if it were after a taxing job? If you choose to lay back and relax before doing your tasks, you will be more prone to burnout and will have nothing exciting left to look forward to after accomplishing a task. It is always better to have slack period AFTER a job than before one, especially considering that people are wont to overusing their slack time. This is suicide if you are heading towards a deadline.

3. Never Underestimate Your Tasks – Sometimes procrastination sets in because people underestimate the resources, difficulty, and time spent for a particular task. They will usually say, “It’s just mowing the lawn, its easy; I could do it in a jiffy.” The problem is, no matter how trivial the task, it still takes time and resources to accomplish. If you underestimate a task, you will most likely set too little time to do it and schedule it too close to its deadline.

4. Don’t Allow Yourself to Get Comfortable Doing Nothing – It would definitely help if you kept a subconscious alarm whenever you are doing nothing. Get this alarm to remind you of things that may need to be done. This will help you foster the notion that jobs accomplished now means more time for relaxation later. However, even if this is the case, do not forget to put ample time in for rest and to remove all thoughts of troubles before hitting the sack. The trick here, however, is not to overdo you rest. There is a difference between resting and idling. Always set the right amount of time for rest and stick to that schedule.

STRESS JUDO teaches a method of time management and goal setting called “TF30” – what must be done Today, what must be done by Friday, and what must be done in the next 30 days.

Meditate Your Way To Promotions And Raises By Managing Stress

Posted by stressjudo on April 9, 2009

Meditation by itself is not stress management.  On the other hand, it is difficult to manage stress without understanding meditation principles and practice.  And using meditation to manage workplace anxiety helps you keep your cool in stressful situations.  And being the coolest head gets you promotions and raises at work.  And, being the one that falls apart under stress – no promotions, no raises.

Now, we don’t mean you have to sit on the desk and contemplate your navel in the middle of a meeting.   You can use meditation principles to get your emotions and breathing under control.  You can use meditation focus to maintain your poker face in the light of extraordinary news.  Meditation doesn’t just counter the bad health effects of stress. It is the ability to keep your head under stress that makes you stand out to management.

Here are 5 ways to use meditation to manage stress and get a raise:

  1. Use deep breathing to center yourself.  Meditation breathing centers on drawing air deep in the lungs, which has the physiological effect of clearing your head and getting some control over out of control emotions.
  2. Focus on your priorities.  Meditation trains you to focus.  Kicking in this aspect of meditation will allow you to keep focus during stress, when other people are being distracted by less important items.
  3. Tap internal energy whenever you need it.  Stress wears you out.  It fatigues you.  It breaks down your resolve and your will.  Meditation gives you techniques to access your internal energy, chi, or whatever you call it.
  4. Maintain your focus in the worst of conditions.  Contrary to popular belief, meditation was used by samurai to prepare themselves for battle.  One philosopher talked about being able to meditate inside a brass bowl being struck by a dozen hammers.  Now, imagine that concentration inside of a noisy conference room of bustling warehouse.
  5. Meditation suppresses the “fight or flight” reaction.  Under stress, your body instinctively reacts by preparing to fight the stress or run from it.  By using meditation to suppress this reaction, you open up the possibilities of dealing with stress.

Not using meditation to be able to focus your mind and emotions means that you are actually fighting two battles in a stressful situation: the stressor and your own mind.  If you fail on either of these battles, you fail.  And failing is not how you get promoted.  Unfortunately, unless you add meditation to your system of what to do to relieve stress, you don’t have anything else to rely on.  You may not think you have the time to begin meditation.  But what’s working for you now?

Meditation is an integral part of a comprehensive stress management system.  Probably techniques like focus skills and time management in the workplace are part of what you are doing to relieve stress.  But this is not enough.  That’s like a quarterback practicing passing, handing off, and running, but not how to remain calm in the face of a blitz.  Using a comprehensive stress management system which includes meditation throughout will eliminate being overlooked at work and give promotions and raises.

Using Time Management To Aggressively Attack And Destroy Stress

Posted by stressjudo on April 9, 2009

Your career is suffering from not using time management aggressively to manage stress. You are missing promotions and raises, because you are spending your time defending against stress instead of attacking it.  This pain is caused by using time management basically the wrong way.  Too many time management in the workplace seminars teach you to just make To Do lists and then prioritize them.  A proper time management system will not only prioritize your tasks, but allow you to defend your To Do list against interruptions and crises, since those are a huge source of stress.  Nothing you have been doing can alleviate this pain.  This is why you have been passed over for promotions and raises.

Using time management within a complete stress management system can really make you stand out at work.  The type of leadership that is being looked for today is the type of leadership that prevents problems.  Using time management to prevent workplace anxiety instead of just reacting to it keeps the workplace running smoothly.  You can learn a new way to manage your time and your tasks, to prevent stress.  And when you prevent stress, you are spending more time finding the opportunities in stressful situations.

Here are 5 ways to use time management to turn stress into opportunities.

  1. Recognize that time management is really self-discipline.  Time flows forward, no matter what you do.  Time management is really disciplining yourself to stay on task and to be able to resist interruptions and temptations.
  2. Embrace the Pareto Principle.  This principle says that 80% of your results will come from 20% of your efforts (or time or customers or any number of variations).  So constantly review your work, to focus on the 20% that gives you the 80%.
  3. Use the SMART method of goal setting: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Tangible.  This keeps your efforts focused.
  4. Use the TF30 method to prioritize your schedule. Tasks that must be done Today, tasks that must be done by Friday, and tasks that must be done within the next 30 days.  This method will easily allow you to reject distractions that are less important than whatever you are working on.
  5. Delegate properly.  Pick the proper person, and explain clearly what is to be done.   Set a date certain to be completed, and set periodic review dates to monitor the progress.

If you don’t use aggressive time management, your being passed over for promotions and raises will get worse.  Without a time management system that removes stress, your time will continue to be chewed up by fighting stress.  This means that the bad health effects of stress will be magnified by the bad emotional effects of stress.  You think it will be painful to change your time management system.  It will be much more painful not to.

You have seen how time management is an integral part of a comprehensive stress management system.  But many times, your time management system becomes a source of stress instead of part of what to do to relieve stress.  This is because most time management systems do not allow you enough time to handle your tasks and any interruptions.  That’s like planning to travel by plane in winter, but not considering that flights might be delayed from snow or ice.  Using a  comprehensive stress management system which includes time management throughout will eliminate missing promotions and give you more recognition at work.

Staying In Shape Under Stress Can Get You Promoted

Posted by stressjudo on April 1, 2009

It’s bad enough that people less qualified are getting promoted. It’s worse that you keep getting passed over for raises, when your ideas and plans can improve the company. But when all this is happening because of the bad health effects of stress on your body, it causes double stress: pain of no recognition at work, and the physical pain to your body from not handling stress properly.
One of the worst effects of not handling stress properly is that you are distracted from staying fit and in shape. You may have great skills at time management in the workplace, but your lack of time management skills outside of work are letting your health and fitness slip. But maintaining your fitness level will actually give you the physical and emotional strength to stand up to your stressful situation, which makes it easier to stay in shape.

So staying in shape will help you handle stress at work. Handling stress at work will help you stand out and show management that you are the person who should be promoted and get raises. Here are 5 steps to making sure you focus on staying healthy during periods of stress.
1. Don’t use alcohol or drugs to escape from the pain of the stress. Not only does this do nothing to remove the stress (so it will still be there), but these things destroy your ability to handle stress.
2. Follow this simple but effective diet: drink water throughout the day. Eat smaller meals every 3-4 hours instead of loading up on fatty lunches. Avoid candy bars and doughnuts if you feel the need for energy. Eat fruit instead.
3. Do some aerobic exercise each morning. The point is not only to stay in shape, but to start the day controlling your time, which gives you the mindset of being in control. Even 10 minutes of some kind of active movement will help you.
4. Stretch every now and then. You don’t have to be an Olympic gymnast or a yoga master. Just stretch your back, if you sit at a desk, or your shoulders and legs, if you do strenuous work. This will loosen your muscles, and improve blood flow, which keep you clear-headed to think through stress.
5. Do a sport or activity you enjoy. Even if you aren’t very good at it. This is important not only for the positive distraction it provides from the stress you are under. It also reinforces that you are in control.
If you don’t keep an eye on your fitness and health during stressful periods, then the effects of stress on your body will get worse. Think about it. How does stress affect health? By putting constant steady pressure on your body systems until they simply wear out and break down. And if you wear down at work, someone else steps up and gets the glory.
When most stress management systems discuss what to do to relieve stress, they focus on counteracting things like high blood pressure and headaches. Maintaining your fitness level is included, but as an after thought. Maintaining fitness is an integral part of a comprehensive stress management system. Using a comprehensive stress management system which includes fitness maintenance throughout will eliminate your breaking down under stress and give you the promotions and raises you deserve.

Posted by stressjudo on February 27, 2009

The easiest way to come to management’s attention is to melt down during a crisis. All of your good accomplishments, goals attained, co-worker respect – all gone in one fleeting moment. All because you didn’t know what to do to relieve stress.

You’ll find the full story in the new article discussing what to do to relieve stress.
